Successful Childrens Photography - It's a State of Mind

There's nothing I enjoy as much in drawing and photography, as the moment I succeed in capturing some of the essence of a child's consciousness to show on a print. It might not seem apparent to look at a child, but they can be truly challenging as photography subjects, and if you ever want anything more than just a toothless "cheese", if you want a picture that fairly drips with a child's innocence, wit and sparkling energy, then the stock-in-trade of imagination, creativity and patience you'll need can often be staggering. Here are my childrens photography tips on how to create moments and capture them on film in a way that the children being photographed will look at 20 years from now and say, "Yes, that is what it felt like to be me at five".

To begin with, you can't just pull a child in front of the camera and expect her to perform. The first lesson of childrens photography is, that you need to adjust your whole photography routine to them, because a natural smile never pops up on cue. And make sure that you don't pick a moment when the child is sleepy, hungry or cranky. Once you have your child with you, make sure that you spend a couple of hours around the child to build up a bit of familiarity a friendly atmosphere.

The child who is your subject needs to be comfortable; this isn't the time to insist on what outfit she should wear, and what place to frame your pictures. A child who is happy and confident about herself and her surroundings will bring forth more natural presence in her pictures. It should probably not be a place she is unfamiliar with, or she'll be careful and a bit withdrawn (unless that's the feel you are going for). When parents are present at the shoot, they can get terribly anxious about how they need to bring the best in the child out. It is for a reason that stage parents can be so distracting for young child actors. It could be a good idea and to help the anxious parent away from the photography area for some time. Childrens photography needs the child to be in her element - coaxing better performance out of her is hardly the way to catch her at her most natural.

And "natural" comes with patience. No end of patience. You need to understand that the child is the one that directs where the photography heads that day. You need to talk to her about her favorite toy, what she wants to do, or what a shadow reminds her of; try talking about a favorite cartoon character - and then listen. Good listening - is there no end to what there is to be gained with this great ability? The more you listen to a child, the more she will open up. And the best way to speak to a child is always to crouch down to her level. That's something all childrens photography experts will tell you - for the most part, they have to be no taller than she is.

Portrait Photography

Do you just snap pictures of friends without a thought to how it my turn out? Portrait photography takes you a step up from people photography. It gives you elements to notice such as the angle you take the photograph, the lighting you will use, and the expression of emotion on a persons face. While you may be an amateur photographer deciding to take Christmas photos without the expense you will need to have some basic knowledge of techniques used by the professionals.

First when taking a photograph of a person you need to study their face. The face is important to the angle you will shoot from. Though it is a cliché, it is true some people have a better side. This could be in relation to scarring or acne breakouts or even simpler. For instance my left eye is larger than my right by just a bit, and looking head on into the camera will cause a horrible portrait, however if the photographer comes from the right side and angles up a little the light and shadows will help even out the features while keeping the distinctions that make me who I am.

Portrait photography is about capturing the essence of the subject, the personality. The little nuances of a face add character to the portrait. You will want to loosen up your subjects. If you are becoming a professional portrait photographer you will want to learn about your subject as you are taking pictures or perhaps meet them before the session. If they are just your family then you should know what would get their personality captured on film.

Lighting is the next important step to portrait photography. A lot of photographers prefer natural light to artificial. Your subject will in part decide this for you. Remember you will use the light you have. Natural light will often require setting the aperture to compensate for the cameras lack of definition. In other words you need to create the contrast with the light and shadows for the effect you want. Often artificial light is harsh and not directed properly unless in a studio. Again you will need to use the manual settings on your camera to create the perfect portrait.

The background is also important when discussing light. In a studio a photographer will pick a background that will not wash your features out or your clothing. They want to have a distinction or contrast between you and the background. This is also important of home portrait photography. You will want a background that gives color to your subject rather than taking it away. Finding a nice spot with a tree to sit on and mountains in the background can be a great portrait, but you will want to make sure the background is not too busy to distract from the subject. Make the subject seem apart of the picture rather than outside of it.

The type of camera and film you use will also determine the quality of the photography. Once you combine techniques such as lighting, angles, and understanding your subject you will be able to create a near to professional if not professional portrait for your friends and family no matter the occasion. Just snapping a picture is possible, but it would be great to have a better portrait?

Taking Wedding Pictorials One Step Forward with Digital Photography

Cameras have always been present in times of events. They can really help people keep all of their treasured memories. Of course, during weddings/nuptials the ever-reliable cameras are surely present.

It is well known that weddings are one of the wonderful events in an individual's life. Many people wait for the day they can have a sacred union with the one that they love. And in order for them to have at least a good memory of this great event, cameras are needed.

You know, it's amazing how far our technology has come with regards to photography. Many devices or gadgets are now being introduced in order to help people treasure special moments in their everyday lives.

There are also new cameras that are being made especially to capture the most treasured times in our everyday lives. Among these devices are digital cameras. These devices are really great for capturing happy moments during events like weddings.

Since the introduction of digital cams, they have outsold film cameras. Thus, this makes digital wedding photography a more popular service than film photography. Why?

Well, this may be because digital photography can take wedding pictorials into new heights. Cameras used for digital photography provides a lot of new advantages to their users.

One of the major advantages of these digital cameras is that they let users skip the usual film separation process, which is among the most time-consuming processes in photography. So, removing one time-consuming process would mean getting results faster, right? And when living in a fast-phase society, quick results are a must!

Another advantage of digital wedding photography is that, even though it provides fast results, the quality of each printed photo is not sacrificed. This means that no matter how fast you get your pictures, the result is still beautiful.

Another advantage of digital wedding photography is that it provides customization options to its users. This would mean that a user can edit photos even before they are printed. You can change the size, brightness, contrast or sharpness of your photo. You can even add or remove some details on your photos.

Digital photography has also integrated with cellular phones. This means that you only need to bring a phone to take pictures during weddings. Nevertheless, it is a fact professional digital cameras can provide better results than the cameras of cellular phones. Most professional digital cams have 6 mega pixels while cellular phones usually have lower mega pixel.

But perhaps the greatest advantage of digital wedding photography is the availability of your photos to be reproduced over and over again without making any variations between the first printed photo and the last photo printed. Digital photography allows users to save their files on their computers, which would mean that they can be reproduced without wearing out any film, since it doesn't need one.

But, no matter how great a technology is, it's still not perfect. One of the major disadvantages of digital photography is that it is not ideal for 4-color printing. Why? Well this is because of the fact that there will always be a variation between the images you will see on your pc monitor and your 4 color printed photo.

Why? Well, computer monitors use RGB, right? Four color printing uses CMYK. RGB and CMYK have entirely different outputs. So, no matter what you do, the image on your monitor will never be the same as your 4 color photos, unless there are computer monitors that also use CMYK to produce colors for the images and texts.

Nevertheless, digital wedding photography is still better than film photography and that is also a fact. See for yourself.

The Boost of Digital Photography in the Fashion Industry

The growth of digital photography had made it feasible for everyone to capture the perfect moments of their lives better than ever. The big improvement in shutter speed and photo resolution, make it convenient and easy for both beginners and professional photographers to take good pictures. In addition, photo editing can now be done to create a more creative and artistic photos.

Digital photography has also been a huge plus for many online and offline businesses. A stock or image is used by a photographer to purchase images. These stocks are then purchased on different prices, depending on the license. But since they are digital, and they can be acquired outright from different companies, they can be modified, manipulated and edited using sophisticated editing software.

Today, digital photography is known to boost the fashion industry. Digital fashion photography far off different from doing television footages and taking photos on films. For digital photographers, it is a more challenging field to work on.

The ultimate purpose of digital fashion photography is to capture every detail in the ramp. It will focus on the figures of the stunning ladies, in their most fancy, magnificent and extreme fashion outfits. Digital fashion photography will capture the various outlooks essential to gratify the acceptance in world wide fashion trends.

While digital fashion photography is a meticulous field, a photographer should be creative enough to know the hottest craze each year.

Like fashion designers, digital fashion photographers should also work in high end ease, filed with beauty and glamour. The latter should really come up with the fashion’s great photos.

Here are few points to consider on digital fashion photography

1. Keep focused

2. Ensure that your camera is always with you

3. Know and set your objective

4. Don’t let go of the opportune moment

5. Envision on how could come up with a creative and interesting pictures

6. Make use of various distance and angles for each shot

7. Show contrast by giving blurry parts and sharp emphasis over your photos.

8. Organize your subject

9. Put weight on the shapes and lines of interest.

10. Create good impact that you are giving information on your audience

A digital photographer should also be conscious that whatever output he delivers will uncover the care, readiness and awareness of the many vital points to remember in taking pictures.

Requirements for a Flourishing Digital Fashion Photography

1. Proper Lighting- The photographer should use curtains and reflectors. Use a tripod and set light to either left or right side of the object at an angle of 45 degree. As much as possible, avoid bright lights, or else use polarizing filters. And lastly, never underexpose parts or expose the whole photo(e); never expose the entire photograph, underexpose other parts.

2. Good Color Harmony- Photographers can make use of backdrop materials to give emphasis on tint and color. Use reflectors, filters, see-thru transparency, and diffusers to neutralize colors. It is recommended to use gray and white backgrounds.

3. The Artistic view of a Photographer – As a professional photographer, your audience may not see what you see in the picture. People pay value to the subject and not on the background. It should connect each other.

Learning Digital Photography

There will always be a market for cameras that use film, but more and more people who take snapshots and do not use their cameras for commercial uses are buying digital. Not only can you see the pictures you have taken right away, you do not have to have them developed. You can take a picture and have it printed from your home computer within a matter of minutes. If you want to take more than the average snapshot with your digital, you have to learn digital photography. The basics of learning digital photography are the same, but the way the camera works is different. That is what you have to learn.

Older digital cameras came with a setting that allows the user to set flash, exposure, and focus just like with a manual film camera. This is great if you know what you are doing, but not all cameras come with this any more. The more expensive digital cameras will still have it in some cases, but most lower end cameras have skipped this setting. You get a bunch of presets, but for most people, these can work well for just about every situation. Learning digital photography with this type of camera means learning what each setting can do.

You may already know that you have to let more light into the camera in low light situations. That means the shutter stays open a bit longer but the picture can blur more easily. There are settings on most cameras for low light, but there are more than one. That makes it hard to know what setting to use. If you are learning digital photography, you have to take your camera where you would normally take pictures and experiment with the settings. Take the same picture with all pre-sets you think would work and then see which one works the best.

For framing and subject matter when learning digital photography, you can easily find books and information online that helps with such things. You can take better pictures if you learn how to tell a story with each frame. If you take all of your pictures with the entire bodies of all of your subjects in the pictures, your pictures are going to be boring and the detail that makes the picture great may be lost. Simple tricks and ideas can help you do better when framing and make your photo album much more interesting in a hurry.

Learning digital photography is often just like anything else – a matter of trial and error. The great thing about digital photography is that you do not have to take pictures, pay to have them developed, and then see what you did right and what you did wrong. You can see the results immediately and adjust right away. If the shot of a lifetime was messed up, you know it right away and you can retake it in some cases. If you use film, you would never have that option. Use the instant nature of digital photography to learn as much as you can on your own.

Understanding Digital Photography: Techniques in Getting a Great Picture

Have you heard of, “There is more than meets the eye?”

We use our eyes to view things in our environment. However, through time, man has devised ways on how to preserve the things normally seen and thus treasured, whether these are beautiful or not, and one of which is by using cameras.

The images that are captured by cameras can make our eyes see things that have happened before. Moreover, it enables the heart to wish for beautiful things to happen in the future.

These days, the biggest sellers in the camera market are the so-called digital SLR cameras. These are the modern gadgets that can trigger our creativity and seats of emotion.

Though relatively new, most people choose digital SLRs because it can be easily manipulated. However, having these cameras does not completely guarantee that the every captured image is great and perfect.

Following are some point by point guidelines that should be considered to maximize the expense of your digital cameras:

1. Simplicity

Zoom in to capture the part you want to emphasize. Thus, irrelevant objects or areas can be taken away or just allow them to soften.

2. Rule of thirds

When capturing a moving object, it is advisable to capture them moving into the imaginary tic-tac-toe frame from one of the two sides.

3. Shapes and lines

Capture a straight line at an angle by moving five to ten feet away to the side to capture at an angle.

4. Vantage point

To add significance or emphasis to an object, take a picture at a lower vantage point. Increasing the height away from the object can reduce its significance.

5. Balance

Pick out the dominant objects and arrange them so that they complement each other. However, unbalanced or asymmetrical objects are often more visually stimulating than balanced objects.

6. Framing

You can use the frames of your windows to capture an outdoor scene. You can also use doors and walls of a building to capture a person a walking person.

7. Indoor photographs

You can use natural lighting when you are taking candid shots so that the subjects will not be bothered by the flash coming out of the camera.

8. Camera adjustments

The aperture allows light to enter. You must learn how to adjust this properly and appropriately so that images will not appear as either very bright or very dim.

Lowering the shutter speed allows the image to be more exposed to light. You must learn the proper length of exposure so that images will not appear as blurry.

9. ISO speeds

Digital cameras have ISO speeds ranging from 100 to 800. The higher the ISO, the higher the camera’s sensitivity to light’s exposure. Be sure to master using this element along with the camera’s aperture and shutter speeds.

10. Lens/Filters

There are digital cameras that allow additional lenses to be attached to the main lens, or the lenses can be completely interchangeable.

Lenses can be categorized as follows:

a. macro lens – allows you to get closer to objects like insects and flowers

b. wide-angle lens – used for capturing landmarks, and large and wide sceneries

c. telephoto lens – allows longer zooms that let you get close to objects that are rather unsafe

Filters, on the other hand are used to:

a. soften the effect of the image

b. provide blurring on the edges for portraits that have sensitive moods

c. add light flares for the image to be more dramatic

d. to reduce glare so that pictures appear more saturated, crisp, and vivid.

However, if you still want to improve on the images that you have taken, the following list of software can allow touch-ups:

• Adobe Photoshop

• Apple’s iPhoto

• Corel Paint Shop Pro

• Google Picasa

• LView

Once you have understood and mastered the important points on digital photography and capturing pictures, you will soon realize that the keys in getting great pictures are: “Even a simple aim and shoot camera” and “Creative ME.”

Is it Cheating to Send in Photoshopped Work in at a Photography Contest

It is a modern pet peeve that the artistically inclined love to fret about. If you are a musician, you can't stand the fact that children these days sit before their Macs to play around with GarageBand and they call themselves musicians. Why, if you are that way inclined, you could arguably have a hard time accepting that a young man with wild hair and a screaming electric guitar next to a stack of Marshall amps is a musician too. Take photography; if you have a taste for cameras and photography, then the magazine Popular Photography is probably on your monthly subscription list and you usually look forward to their Reader's Photo Contest every year. Actually, it isn't just the photography enthusiast that's usually interested in that contest. Regular people out there with a camera and a computer are often able to create stunning and wild creations that you would not believe came out of the mind of a lone everyday person with no equipment, training or funds. I remember an entry in that photography contest about 15 years ago that just blew everyone away. It was a large unsupported phantom faucet mysteriously floating in the air against a beautiful blue sky, that was pouring torrents of crystal water. People couldn't stop wondering at the marvels of digital photo manipulation.

That was before Photoshop became popular. Now, it looks like almost all the pictures in that photography contest, like any other, have had a little of Photoshopping done (if not a lot), and everyone is up in arms at how the ancient and august art form that photography is, is being subverted, by any punk with a computer. To see a perfect touched-up woman in a wedding dress walking up the aisle, the folds of her gown just picture-perfect, her smile maybe a little too radiant, the lighting catching behind her veil to form a kind of halo and little flowers tumbling down her train in just a precious way - all of this is wonderful to see on a photograph only because setting things up this way, and having the skill to time your picture perfectly, with the right lighting, all in an instant, requires artistry and training of the most extreme nature. But if you could just take your average photograph, move in the lighting on Maya, redraw the smile to be more angelic and radiant on Photoshop, change the angle of the shot and the whole background and put in extra sheen on another program, it doesn't really say much for your ability with a camera.

The only reason a picture like this is remarkable enough that it would win a photography contest is that people imagine that it requires photographic skill. The picture itself is nothing that great. The skill to capture it all in one frame, is what wins the admiration. So is it fair to cry foul here? Not so fast, the Photoshoppers say. If you run your own photography contest how would you put this down in the rules, what is to be considered photography, and what is not? For instance, long before anyone ever had a computer, any photo shot would require that you used a bunch of lights and reflectors to get your picture to shine and stand out. And then your darkroom techniques would make that even better. You choose a camera that could focus on the foreground and blur out the background in a way that really never happens in reality. Or you spent hours getting your subjects, "your actors" set up just so. That was the low-tech way, and today we have a high-tech way. What makes it unfair now?

It's not just a photography contest that you would have trouble defining specific rules in. Defining where a line lies, is always difficult. Perhaps the best way to go about it would be to just move all the high-tech stuff to its own contest.
